Workshop: Hamiltonians and Gaps
The workshop "Hamiltonians and Gaps" will be held on the 6th and 7th of September 2010 at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge, and is being organised by Alastair Kay. The intention is that there will not be a significant conference fee for participation (simply a small amount to cover the cost of the catered coffee and lunch breaks). Instead, all participants will be expected to pay their own expenses.
Abstract
This will be a small workshop, focused on discussing the properties of ground states of systems, how they may be influenced by the energy gaps in the Hamiltonian. This can be expected to include topics such as topological properties of systems, quantum memories, Adiabatic Quantum Computation, Lieb-Robinson bounds, classical simulation techniques and associated computational complexity issues.
Invited Speakers
Confirmed speakers include
- Johan Aberg
- Abbas Al Shimary
- Jens Eisert
- Marie Ericsson
- Steve Flammia
- Simone Montangero
- Christine Muschik
- Norbert Schuch
The provisional programme for the workshop, including the social programme, is available here.
Registration
The registration deadline has now been extended to 18th August
Registration can be performed here, and will close by 6 August 2010. There may be some space for contributed talks. Email Alastair Kay to express an interest in doing so. Please provide a title and abstract of any potential talk.
Accommodation
We have reserved some rooms in nearby Churchill College. These will be provided on a first come, first-served basis, and can be booked through the registration page. We regret that it will be necessary to pay for these rooms in advance. A receipt can be provided on arrival at the conference.
There are also numerous bed and breakfasts and hotels in the area. A useful starting point can be found here.
Travel Information
The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is located in the North-West of Cambridge.
Cambridge is conveniently located near to Stansted Airport. It is a simple matter to transfer between them, either by coach or train. National Express also provides a direct coach service from the other main London airports.
